{ at } home today....Pencils

I wanted to share a random thought with you.  PENCILS
I have noticed that pencils these days are just a waste of money!  Why you ask? Well,  yesterday I spent at least 30 minutes trying to sharpen pencils for my daughter.  She never has a sharpened  pencil. I think a nice sharp pencil makes a huge difference when writting- escpecially at age 9 and in 3rd grade.
So, I sat next to her sharpening pencils while she finished her homework and became seriously frustrated!
2 out of 6 sharpeners worked and all the pencils I attempted to sharpen didn't!  The lead kept breaking off..ugggh

My question is- What happened to the pencils like back in the day?  I remember when I sharpened a pencil it was smooth and not all splintered like the pencils these days or at least all the ones I have?  Even the wood was was different...kinda like a waxy finish and when sharpened it was SHARP!

I have invested in battery operated sharpeners and litterally used once and returned because it just ate the pencil as if it had an appetite..lol

I was able to sharpen 2 out of 50 pencils correctly...how frustrating.  I have found that things these days really aren't made like they were 20+ years ago.   From pencils to basically everything....

It's hard enought to pay the prices these days for the crap that's out there & then,  for the product to fall apart or not work is really frustrating!

I spend more time returning things these days...do you feel the same way or is it just ME?

Quantity NOT QUALITY is the motto...sad

this is the only pencil made by Dixon Ticonderoga that sharpened half way nice....

I was not endorsed by this company purely my opinion.

  1. Not to mention that most erasers on the end of the crummy pencils don't work either! They just smear and create a huge mess! Before I got to the end of your post I was going to recommend Ticonderoga! I bought a package of #2 lead at the beginning of the school year and have found both the pencil and the eraser are better than any we have previously tried. Also I keep an electric sharpener on the counter near the table where my 11 yr old does her homework. She has started using mechanical pencils this year and also likes those.

Enjoy reading your blog...am also in Houston. West University area. Have a great weekend!
